St George’s House

We’re proud to have led the recent and sensitive renovation of St George’s House, a signific and historic building on Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead originally opened by King George VI.  Our team carefully worked to restore the building to its former glory, using vintage photographs to inform our design decisions and ensure that the renovation was true to the building’s original character.

One of the key aspects of our restoration work was the reinstatement of window types that were more fitting of the era. Over the years, the building had undergone changes that had compromised its original design, but we were able to use historic images to specify and install windows that accurately reflected the building’s Art Deco heritage.

We also removed a modern entrance pod that had been added in the 1980s, which had altered the building’s original façade. In its place, we’ve carefully designed a new glazed entrance lobby that sits within the original building footprint, preserving the integrity of the building’s curves and lines. This thoughtful intervention has restored the building’s original gateway from the roundabout to the rear, while providing a modern and welcoming entrance.

The result is a beautifully restored building that showcases the best of Art Deco design while also providing a modern and functional workspace. Our sensitive renovation has breathed new life into St George’s House, making it a unique and inspiring place to work while respecting its rich history.
